Um zu verstehen, wohin wir gehen, ist es manchmal notwendig, zu wissen, woher wir kommen.
Dazu hier einige Worte, um zu erzählen, wie die Pläne zu dieser abenteuerlichen Reise von zwei Freunden im kommenden Frühjahr entstanden sind.
Ich, Sylvain, habe hauptsächlich die letzten zwei Jahren an der Entwicklung einer Chemotherapie an der Harvard Medical School gearbeitet. Jetzt ist für mich die Zeit gekommen, nach Europa zurückzukehren, um diese Forschungen dort fortzusetzen. Meine Abreise ist etwas komplizierter durch den Kauf eines Segelbootes, kurz nachdem ich in Boston im Jahr 2010 angekommen bin. Das Boot wurde von einem Deutschen, namens Klaus, der in den USA seit den 1980er Jahren lebt, gekauft. Er hatte es nach seiner Tochter auf den Namen "Kerstin" getauft.. Nachdem wir das Boot übernommen hatten, haben wir das Boot umbenannt: "Compagnon"... was Begleiter auf Französisch bedeutet.
Diese Reise ist über meine Rückkehr nach Europe mit “Compagnon“ und der Anfang eines spannenden Projekts.
Obwohl ich schon seit längerer Zeit den Wunsch habe, auf den Meeren der Welt zu segeln, hatte ich nicht erwartet, dass meine zweimonatige Trans-Atlantiküberquerung so schnell auf mich zukommen würde. Da ich "Compagnon" mit nach Hause nehmen möchte, wenn ich im Frühjahr die USA verlasse, habe ich keine andere Wahl, als sie nach Hause zu segeln, da ich sie nicht verkaufen möchte.
Meine Lust auf Abenteuer war immer vorhanden, und ich weiss um meine Fähigkeiten, Herausforderungen zu meistern. Diese Reise ist das Abenteuer meines Lebens. Ich werde die Sicherheit und die Routine des Forschungs-Labors für eine Zeit hinter mir lassen müssen und mich auf eine spannende transatlantische Reise konzentrieren...
Den Atlantik auf einem Segelboot zu überqueren ist keine leichte Aufgabe, unabhängig von den Segelerfahrungen der Teilnehmer. Während der Überfahrt werden wir Tausende von nautischen Meilen vom Land entfernt sein. Die Crew wird daher die Verantwortung für das Boot tragen und in sämtlichen Notfallsituationen auf sich selbst gestellt sein, da Hilfe unter Umständen weit entfernt sein wird. Es verspricht ein unvergessliches Erlebnis zu werden, welches unser Leben und unsere Freundschaften für ein Leben lang verändern wird.
Viele Langfahrtsegler überqueren die Ozeane jedes Jahr - einschließlich den Nordatlantik - und die meisten tun es eher anonym. Wir sehen dieses Abenteuer als die Gelegenheit, ein Projekt zu gründen, um Gelder für Stiftungen zu sammeln. Unser Wunsch ist es, den Stiftungen zu helfen, die Träume von kranken Kindern verwirklichen, so wie wir unseren realisieren. Und weil es für uns eine Reise über die Grenzen ist, hoffen wir, dass sich dieses Projekt auch über die Grenzen hinweg auswirken wird.
Wir hoffen, auf die Unterstützung einiger Kindern aus Nordamerika, Puerto Rico und Europa, die mit Krankheiten zu kämpfen haben. Es ist unser Ziel, diesen Kindern eine Chance zu geben, unser Abenteuer „live" mitzuerleben. Deswegen bieten wir ihnen die Möglichkeit, an einem Tag unserer Reise der "First Mate" an Bord zu sein. Eine Zeit, in der die Kinder von den Sorgen und der täglichen Routine ihrer Krankenhausaufenthalte durch die Teilnahme an unserem Abenteuer abgelenkt werden.
Diese Website existiert nicht nur als Plattform wo wir unsere Eindrücke und Erfahrungen während unserer Reise mitteilen, sondern auch für alle, die ihre Eindrücke und Erfahrungen ebenfalls mit uns teilen möchten.
Wir würden gern unseren Traum mit anderen teilen - und hoffen, dass auch andere ihre Träume mit uns teilen werden. Daher haben wir unserem Projekt den Titel: "Sailing for Dreams" gegeben.
Vor diesem Hintergrund erklärt sich der tiefere Sinn des Motos unserer Reise:
"Im Leben geht es nicht darum, die Stürme zu überstehen, sondern zu lernen, im Regen zu tanzen."

My name is Sylvain, let me give you some background as for how everything started. I have spent much of the past two years researching the development of chemo-therapy at the Harvard Medical School in Boston. Now, the time has come for me to return to Europe and continue my research. My departure, however, has been somewhat complicated by my desire to leave a legacy where ever I go. Shortly after having arrived to Boston in 2010, I purchased a sailboat. The boat was being sold by a german guy named Klaus, who has lived in the United States since the 1980's. When Klaus owned the boat, it was named "Kerstin," an "homage" to his beloved daughter. He bestowed all his passion and care on this boat, I was honored to continue caring for her. Shortly after purchasing it I re-named the boat: "Compagnon," which is French word for companion. My voyage is about taking "Compagnon" back home to Europe with me and taking this opportunity to leave behind a legacy of love and adventure...
Although I have the wish of sailing the oceans of the world some day, I had not anticipated that my month-long trans-atlantic crossing would come along as quickly as it has. Since I want to take "Compagnon" back home with me when I leave the U.S. this spring, I have no option but to sail her home. I can't bear the thoughts of having to sell her.
My taste for adventure is strong, and I know that my skills are up to the challenge. A long journey lies ahead of me and my crew of two friends; who are as passionate about sailing as I am. This voyage is the adventure of a lifetime. I would be leaving the safety and routine of the research laboratory in my wake to embark on this thrilling trans-atlantic crossing, charting a course that I know is destined to change our lives forever...
Crossing the Atlantic on a sailboat is never an easy feat, regardless of one's sailing experience. During the crossing, we will be thousands of nautical miles from the nearest land. Our crew, will be responsible for all aspects of the voyage as help will be too far away at any given time. This is why I am opening the adventure to my friends: Thomas and Gero. Both very experienced blue water sailors who have participated in regattas in Europe. Dr. Gero Skopp MD Ms works as a radiologist and neurosurgeon, who has worked with pediatric oncology. Thomas Hanf is a product and communications designer who participates professionally in the German Sailing League regattas.
It promises to be an unforgettable adventure.
Many cruising sailboats cross the oceans each year - including the North Atlantic - and most do it on a rather anonymous basis. We have decided to use this adventure as an opportunity to create a project and help raise funds for selected foundations. Our aim is to help children realize their dreams while we are realizing ours; for ours is a trip beyond frontiers. We wish to see this project transcend boundries.
We are hoping to "enlist" a crew of children from North America, Puerto Rico and Europe who are battling illnesses that have compromised their ability to participate in life as fully as they would like. It is our desire to give these children an opportunity to follow our adventure in "real time," and to afford them the chance to serve as "First Mate" for a day, experiencing this adventure first-hand, via the internet.
This voyage can provide an opportunity for the children to transcend the day-to-day routine of their hospital stay, while sharing our adventure with us. This website exists not only as a place for us to share our impressions and experiences during our trip, but also as a vehicle for others to share their impressions.
We wish to share our dream with them - and hope that they will share their dreams with us, too! This is why we have titled this project: "Sailing for Dreams."
It is with this in mind that we encourage everyone to consider the wisdom of these words:

Peu de temps après l'avoir acheté, cependant, je l'ai re-baptisé «Compagnon». Ce voyage raconte mon retour en bateau vers l'Europe avec "Compagnon" et le début d'un ambitieux projet.
Bien que j'ai le souhait de traverser les océans, je n'avais pas prévu que ma première traversée de l'Atlantique viendrait aussi rapidement. Je désire ramener "Compagnon" avec moi en l'Europe quand je quitterai les Etats-Unis ce printemps 2012. Je me dois de le ramener à la voile car je ne souhaite pas le vendre.
Mon goût pour l'aventure est fort, et je sais que mes compétences sont à la hauteur des défis qui s'annoncent pour moi et mes 2 équipiers - des amis qui sont aussi passionnés par la voile que je le suis. Ce voyage est l'aventure d'une vie. Je vais devoir quitter la sécurité - et la routine - du laboratoire de recherche derrière moi pour me lancer dans ce passionnant voyage.
Traverser l'Atlantique sur un voilier n'est pas une chose facile, indépendamment de son expérience de voile. Pendant la traversée, nous serons a des milliers de miles nautiques de la terre la plus proche. L'équipage, par conséquent, sera chargée de traiter toutes les urgences de façon indépendante, car toute aide sera certainement trop loin. C'est pourquoi je souhaite ouvrir l'aventure à mes amis Thomas et Gero. Dr. Gero Skopp est un radiologue et neurochirurgien. Ya que quiero tener "Compagnon" de vuelta a mi casa cuando salga de los EE.UU. esta primavera, no tengo más remedio que navegarle a Alemania. No soporto el pensamiento de tener que venderla.
Mi deseo por la aventura es fuerte, y sé que mis habilidades estan a la altura del desafío. Queda un largo viaje por delante. Mi equipo de dos amigos, son tan apasionados por la vela como yo. Este viaje es la aventura de nuestras vidas. Cruzar el Atlántico en un velero no es una tarea fácil, independientemente de la experiencia de uno en la navegación. Durante la travesía, habrá miles de millas náuticas antes de la costa más cercana. Nuestro equipo, será responsable de todos los aspectos del viaje dado que la ayuda estara demasiado lejos en cualquier momento dado. Nuestro objetivo es ayudar a los niños a realizar sus sueños mientras que realizamos los nuestros, El nuestro es un viaje más allá de las fronteras y deseamos que este proyecto trascienda los limites entre paises, agencias y barreras fisicas.
Tenemos la esperanza de "conseguir" un equipo de niños de América del Norte, Puerto Rico y Europa que esten luchando contra enfermedades cancerosas que han puesto en peligro su capacidad para participar en la vida tan plenamente como les gustaría. Es nuestro deseo dar a estos niños la oportunidad de seguir nuestra aventura en "tiempo real" y darles la oportunidad de servir como "Almirantes" por un día, viviendo esta aventura de primera mano, a través de el Internet.
Este viaje puede proporcionar una oportunidad para que los niños puedan trascender la rutina de día a día durante su estancia en el hospital, compartiendo nuestra aventura.
